Sunset Trip Labuan Bajo

Not every Komodo experience has to begin at dawn. The Sunset Trip is a two-to-three-hour afternoon boat journey designed entirely around the legendary golden hour of the Flores Sea. As the sun descends over the islands west of Labuan Bajo, the sky turns through layers of amber, rose, and violet — reflected across the still water in a display that photographers and romantics return for night after night.

The route visits one or two nearby islands with time for a quick snorkel at a healthy coral reef before anchoring to watch the sun sink below the horizon with a cold drink in hand. The highlight for many guests is the stop at Kalong Island, where thousands of giant fruit bats — some with wingspans exceeding one meter — emerge in a dramatic evening migration that darkens the sky above the mangroves.

The Sunset Trip is the perfect first evening in Labuan Bajo — no early wake-up, no strenuous activity, just pure atmosphere and natural beauty as a gentle introduction to the magic of the Flores Sea.

Labuan Bajo Harbor
Siaba Kecil or Seraya Island — Afternoon Snorkeling The boat departs in the afternoon and makes a short stop at one of the near-shore reef sites west of Labuan Bajo. Siaba Kecil is a shallow, sheltered reef known for sea turtles — it is one of the most reliable spots in the region to swim alongside them in calm, clear water. Seraya Island offers a different experience: a steep coral wall dropping into deep water, with larger fish and the occasional passing reef shark. The snorkel stop is relaxed and unhurried; this is the gentle warm-up before the main event of the evening. Kalong Island — Flying Fox Migration As the afternoon transitions toward dusk, the boat anchors off Kalong Island for one of the most spectacular wildlife displays in the Komodo region. Kalong is home to one of the largest colonies of giant Sunda flying foxes (Pteropus vampyrus) in Indonesia — fruit bats with wingspans exceeding one meter. Each evening at dusk, the entire colony launches from the mangrove trees and fills the sky in a ribbon of dark shapes stretching for hundreds of meters, heading out to the mainland to feed through the night. The sight of thousands of bats streaming overhead against a darkening sky is genuinely dramatic — one of those moments where everyone on deck falls silent. Flores Sea Sunset Viewpoint The boat anchors in open water facing west as the sun approaches the horizon. Cold drinks and light snacks are served on deck. The Flores Sea sunset is famous among photographers for its intensity — the sky turns through shades of amber, rose, and deep violet, reflected on the calm water in a mirror image that seems almost artificial. The islands of the national park are silhouetted on the horizon. There is nothing to do but watch. The boat returns to Labuan Bajo in the early evening as the lights of the town begin to appear on the hillside across the water.
