Waerebo is one of the most remote and mystical villages in all of Indonesia — a living Manggarai community of seven conical mbaru niang houses perched at 1,200 meters elevation in the rainforest of central Flores. Reaching it requires a 3–4 hour jungle trek from the valley floor, passing through bamboo groves, mountain streams, and tropical forest so dense the canopy blocks the sun.
Arriving at Waerebo feels like stepping into a world that time forgot. The village has been inhabited for over 800 years and the community maintains its ancestral architecture, customs, and weaving traditions with extraordinary pride. You’ll be welcomed with a traditional ceremony, share a meal with a local family, and sleep inside a mbaru niang house — a conical communal dwelling that has sheltered Manggarai families for centuries.
The second day balances the highland adventure with coastal beauty at Nuca Molas, a small island celebrated for its white-sand beach and crystal-clear waters. It’s one of the least-visited and most beautiful beaches in the Flores region — a perfect place to unwind after the demands of the mountain trek.
